Stan Silverman is the former president and chief executive officer of PQ Corporation, a family owned global company operating in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific in two core businesses â chemicals and engineered glass materials. Stan rose through the ranks at PQ over nearly 35 years, and is very experienced in dealing with the issues of family-owned enterprises.
Stan is the Leadership Catalyst at Tier 1 Group, a firm of strategists and advisors for preeminent growth. He is vice chairman of the board of trustees of Drexel University, a trustee of Friends Select School and a member of the Drexel Close School of Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. Stan writes a weekly guest column on Effective Leadership for Philadelphia Business Journal.
He is the former chairman of the board of the Drexel University College of Medicine, and former chairman of the Soap and Detergent Association. He has served as a guest lecturer on Executive Leadership at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and at the LeBow College of Business of Drexel University, where he holds the position of executive in residence.
He is a director on the boards of Drummond Scientific where he serves as lead director, Femco Holdings, LLC, Exocor, Inc. and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He formerly served on the boards of General Chemical Corporation, A. Schulman, Inc., innRoad, Inc., C&D Technologies, Inc., Met-Pro Corporation and PQ Corporation.
Stan began his business career as a process engineer at Atlantic Richfield, subsequently acquired by BP plc. He joined PQ Corporation in 1971. During his career at PQ, he has held positions in engineering, operations planning, marketing, sales and business unit executive management. Stan became PQ Corporation president and chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors in January 2000.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering and a MBA degree from Drexel University. Stan also completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.
